One of the best condiments to ever exist is the hot sauce! There are so many different varieties and it can add a hint of spice to any meal. Here at Ed’s Tavern, we take our hot sauce seriously and love to celebrate it. This year, National Hot Sauce Day will take place on January 22nd! One of our favorite topics is the timeline of how hot sauce came to be. We can thank Colonel Maunsell White for our beloved hot sauce. In 1849, the banker grew the very first recorded crop of tabasco chiles! Quite a few years late, Old El Paso became a brand in 1980. They are one of the country's biggest producers of the beloved sauce. In 1992, salsa started to bring us even closer to the sauce as it surpassed ketchup as America’s first choice for condiments. Two years later in 1994, Campbell Soup purchased Pace for $1.1 billion, showcasing just how popular hot sauce became. Finally, in 1998 a Super Bowl ad of a man eating a Tabasco-covered slice of pizza solidified the country’s love for the spicy condiment.
