Memorial Day falls on May 25th each year. On this day, we honor those who have given their lives while in the line of duty and in the service of our country. Yet we still find ourselves at a loss when it comes to thinking of the proper ways to give back. We can’t begin to possibly comprehend the sacrifices made by so many in the name of freedom and democracy. While the debt is enormous, there are many ways that we can give back to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
Donate
Whether you decide to make a financial contribution or pledge some of your time to decorate a memorial site, the donation is one of the sincerest ways you can show gratitude. There are several charities and non-profit organizations
Write
You don’t have to be an accomplished wordsmith to write a letter to those who have proudly served. It’s the act of expressing your feelings of gratitude that those who are currently serving or at home will appreciate. Programs such as Operation: Gratitude allows for letters to reach our brave men and women on the frontline. There are also programs such as Operation: Write Home, which allow for donations so our veterans can have the supplies they need to contact their loved ones while they’re overseas.
Dedicate Your Time to Current Veterans
One of the best ways you can donate time is by spending it with local veterans. If you’re not much of a talker, there’s a compromise—you can listen. Some of these men and women have seen sights that defy all logical comprehension. Just sitting down and allowing them to tell you the stories of their experiences, sacrifices, and ordeals can be one of the best gestures of loving-kindness you can make. And remember, saying “thank you” is always free.
Show Support to the Families of Veterans
If you know the family of a veteran who is currently serving, has served, or even lost a loved one overseas, spend a few moments talking to them. There’s a chance that this time of year is difficult for them, and even if there’s nothing you can do to alleviate their struggle directly, the gesture of offering to help will remind them that there are those who care.
Ed’s Tavern & Giving Back
Memorial Day is important to us as Ed’s Tavern. Giving back is one of the values we believe in strongly, not just on Memorial Day, but all year round. This is why we offer specials to our veterans and first responders every Tuesday from 5:00 PM until closing. It’s our own way of saying “thank you.”
