Would you believe that there’s an entire day dedicated to blue agave juice and it is celebrated on July 24th? Yes! Every year we can look forward to recognizing this delightful occasion by toasting margaritas all over the country. Ed’s Tavern is proud to provide interesting information about the background of Tequila and how you can take part in National Tequila Day by ordering a margarita.
Did you know that although it is common for liquors to age, agave plants require between eight and 12 years of growth before farmers can harvest them to be fermented into tequila? Wow! It sure takes a lot of time and patience to cultivate these plants so that we can enjoy a long-standing favorite adult beverage.
Tequila’s forefather was a milky, fizzy, agave drink referred to as pulque. It can be traced as far back as the Mesoamerican era around 1000 B.C. when local Mexicans would routinely harvest and then ferment it for consumption. The tequila we know and savor today was originally manufactured in the 16th Century A.D. by an area of land that was officially labeled as Tequila in 1666. However, a Spanish aristocrat named Don Pedro Sánchez de Tagle created the world’s first tequila factory 66 years earlier in the Mexican state of Jalisco, the site of the modern city of Tequila. Furthermore, Don Jose Antonio de Cuervo founded the original Vino Mezcal de Tequila de Jose Cuervo over a century later in 1795 in the region of Tequila, bringing life to the most triumphant tequila in the world ever since.
The genesis of Tequila has been adequately documented but the way that National Tequila Day came to be is not as clear. It is not known with absolute certainty who deemed the holiday, why it came into existence, or the reason why it falls on a particular date. In any event, the fact that National Tequila Day takes place on July 24th every year in the United States is something that is just happily accepted.
