The first use of the expression "happy hour" was back in 1914. American sailors aboard the U.S.S. Arkansas would drink, box, and dance after long days. Journalists would write about the American sailor’s celebration, calling it "happy hour."
Sailors weren't supposed to have alcohol aboard naval vessels, but that didn't stop them. Similarly, prohibition didn't stop people from drinking at speakeasies. Happy hour also has roots in the prohibition era. Because alcohol was illegal, people had to be sneaky with their consumption. Instead of drinking in the morning or at night, they would drink in the late afternoon/early evening. That is why the happy hour of today takes place around 4 to 6 p.m.
