Ed’s Tavern is excited to inform you that November 3rd is National Sandwich Day! Sandwiches are always awesome and probably don’t need a commemoration for you to enjoy them, but this gives you the opportunity to skate away from your daily doldrums and get a bite to eat with us. We look forward to having you try one of Ed’s Favorite Sandwiches on National Sandwich Day.
So, where did we get National Sandwich Day? Well, it helps to know the origin of the sandwich. Its namesake comes from John Montague, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, whose favorite meal involved sticking a slab of meat (with a little cheese) in between two pieces of toasted bread. This was all the way back in 1762.
One of the reasons Montague liked it that way so much was because it meant he could eat lunch with one hand and continue gambling with the other. In fact, he was in the middle of a gambling binge that lasted over 24 hours when the idea for the sandwich arrived in the mind of his chef. Yes, many finger foods like the sandwich have been born out of necessity, and in this case, a rather bad habit.
Be that as it may, sandwiches have become one of the most common and favorite foods in western civilization. Sandwiches are so important to Americans that a court in Boston had to settle a dispute over what constituted a sandwich. They basically ruled that taco, burritos, and quesadillas don’t count. You need at least two pieces of bread to qualify.
